Gullane
Gullane, one of East Lothian’s
most picturesque villages, is famous not only for its beautiful sandy
beaches but it is world renowned for its five golf courses, not least
of which is Muirfield, the site of the British Open Championship in
2002.
Lying 4 miles from the
busier town of North Berwick, Gullane has much to offer the discerning
tourist of this idyllic location. It retains the charm of a small Scottish
village where you can still find the local butcher, baker and newsagent
not to mention the more up-to-date, small, yet well-stocked supermarket.
You can travel to the centre of Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh,
by car or bus in 30 minutes or even by train to Princes Street from
the neighbouring village of Drem.
There are many beautiful
walks along the sandy beaches, where there is an abundance of driftwood,
which enables you to BBQ beside the rocks in the sheltered coves. If
your preference is golfing then you have 5 courses to choose from, all
having the most beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The
village also boasts municipal tennis courts which can be used free of
charge!
For the historian, 13th
Century Dirleton Castle, which was visited by both Mary Queen of Scots
and Oliver Cromwell, has some of the most enviable vistas in the locality,
as well as sporting gardens which are stocked with stunning herbaceous
borders. Indeed it is a favourite venue for local girls to wed their
‘knights in shining armour’!
The excellent pubs and
eating places combined with the best of East Lothian’s sandy beaches
and golf courses make this an attractive location for a Scottish holiday.
